about us

Brick and Brack is a collection of this and that, a blog to document our renovations, transformations, and lessons we’ve learned during our journey of making a house – our home.

We moved into our house in October of 2009 in Southern California. Michelle’s parents live in Northern California, and Michael’s parents live in England. We wanted our families to feel a part of what we are doing here, and we started this as a place to keep them in touch with our day to day changes.

During our house hunt, we didn’t really know what we were looking for- but when I saw this house, I fell in love. Michael being the more sensible of the two of us, told me to never fall in love with a place until we had the keys in our hands. But I was hooked. Unfortunately, by the time I contacted the seller agent, the house was already in escrow. We moved on and kept searching.

A few months later, the seller’s agent sent me an email and informed me that the escrow had fallen through. The house was back on the market. It took some convincing, but I dragged Michael back to the house to take another look. The house was 1631 sq ft. and had been built in 1950. With three bedrooms and two baths, it had been owned by only one couple for the entire 59 years. They raised their children in this home and they grew old together. Although the house was out of date, through the wood paneling and blue carpet, you could see that this couple had loved their home and taken pride in keeping it up over the years.

And that’s what we intend to do with it as well.

Thanks for reading.
